Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Four types of bonding must be named with explanation. The location of valence electrons must be mentioned.
Concept introduction:
A bond is a force which holds together the atoms in molecules and ions.
Answer to Problem 2E
Four types of bonding are ionic or electrovalent, covalent, co-ordinate covalent and hydrogen bonding.
Explanation of Solution
In case of ionic bonding, electrons are transferred from one atom to another and thereby get nearest noble gas configuration. Valence electrons of electropositive atom are completely transferred to the electronegative atom.
In covalent bonding, all the participating atom shares electrons equally. All the valence electrons involved are placed in between the two atoms holding the bond.
In coordinate covalent bond one pair of electrons are transferred from one donor atom to another acceptor atom.
In hydrogen bonding, hydrogen atom bonded to electronegative atom bonds with other electronegative atom in same or different molecule. Here the valence electrons are dragged by the more electronegative atom from the hydrogen towards the electronegative atom.
