Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Difference between mass and volume is to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Matter is defined as anything that has mass and volume. Chemists use the word matter to describe all materials and objects in the world such as air, book, chair, ink etc. Matter can be anything that has substance and takes up space.
Answer to Problem 1E
The amount of substance or material in an object is called mass whereas volume is the amount of space occupied by substance or material in an object.
Mass can be measured by a weighing balance whereas volume can be measured using a graduated or measuring cylinder.
Explanation of Solution
Every object/ matter is made up of some material or substance. Matter can be measured by using two properties called mass and volume.
The amount of substance in an object can be measured. This amount of substance is called mass. Mass is a property of matter that can be measured using a balance.
Matter has another property called volume. The substance or material with which matter is made of occupies some space which can be measured using measuring cylinder. The amount of space taken up by matter is called volume.
Two objects of same mass may have different volumes and two objects of same volume may have different masses.
Mass and volume are two properties of every matter that can be measured. Matter is anything that has mass and volume.
