Interpretation:
Whether the given compounds are possible or not must be explained.
Concept introduction:
A compound is formed such that the overall charge on the compound is neutral.
Answer to Problem 3E
LiCl2 and MgCl are not possible. LiCl and AlCl3 are possible.
Explanation of Solution
Aluminium belongs to group 13 with three valence electrons. So it will definitely form Al3 + ion with a valency of 3.
On the other hand, chlorine belongs to halogen family with one valence electron. So it will produce Cl - ion with a valency 1. Thus the compound will be AlCl3 (aluminium chloride).
Lithium belongs to group 1. It has one valence electron and thus it is expected to form Li + ion. Magnesium belongs to group 2. It has two valence electrons and thus it is expected to form Mg2 + ion with valency 2.
Thus expected formula of chloride will be MgCl2 and LiCl.
A compound must be charge neutral.
Thus LiCl2 and MgCl will not be formed as there are residual charges.
Thus LiCl2 and MgCl are not possible. LiCl and AlCl3 are possible.
