Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The method of calculating the masses and volumes of different substances needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
To determine the masses and volumes of different substances many methods can be used but, it depends on the
Explanation of Solution
The mass of a solid can be determined by using weighing machine in grams, milligrams etc. The volume of any liquid material can be determined by measuring cylinder in ml, liter, etc. Also, the volume of solid with perfect shape can be calculated by measuring its dimensions. The volume of a solid with uneven shape can be determined by placing it in container with known volume of water. The level of water increases due to solid immersed in it. This increased level or volume of water will be the volume of solid.
As the property of gases, they take the shape of the container in which it is filled so the volume of gases is influenced by temperature and pressure. The volume and mass of a gas can only be determined by special equipments.
