Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The relation between the chemical stability and the arrangements of electrons in atoms must be explained.
Concept introduction:
The stability of a species is reflected in the electronic configuration of the atom. Here, electronic configuration shows the arrangement of electrons in the orbitals around the nucleus of an atom.
Answer to Problem 1TAI
Electronic configurations with half filled and fulfilled sub-shell are very stable.
Explanation of Solution
Inert gases are stable because they have complete octet. Inert gases have complete shell electronic configuration.
Some atoms have half filled electronic configurations which are also stable.
For example, nitrogen with 2p3 is more stable than that of oxygen in which there is 2p4.
Thus, inert gases are very stable due to complete octet. Also, elements with half-filled outermost orbitals are also stable.
