Polyatomic ions are composed of more than one atom.

Explanation of Solution

The ion that is made up of more than one atom is known as polyatomic ions. It can be seen from the name - polyatomic where poly means many and atomic means atom. Also, ions mean they have charge on them.

Each polyatomic ion has a unique name used to name compounds containing them.

Some examples of polyatomic are mentioned below:

• ${\text{CO}}_{\text{3}}{}^{2-}$ is named as carbonate ion. It is composed of carbon and oxygen.
• ${\text{SO}}_{\text{4}}{}^{2-}$ is named as sulphate ion. It is composed of sulfate and oxygen.
• ${\text{NH}}_{\text{4}}{}^{+}$ is named as ammonium ion. It is composed of nitrogen and hydrogen.

Conclusion

Polyatomic ions are composed of more than one atom.
