Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The difference between an element and a compound must be explained.
Concept introduction:
An element is a pure substance containing only one type of atom, whereas a compound has different types of atoms.
Answer to Problem 1E
An element is composed of one type of atom, whereas in a compound there are different types of atoms in a definite ratio that are bonded together with a chemical force or
Explanation of Solution
An element is represented using a symbol whereas a compound is represented by a formula. For example, aluminum is an element that has only one type of atoms of aluminum. Aluminum is represented by Al.
A compound is aluminum sulfate which is represented by Al(SO4)3.
As per the formula, there are three different types of atoms which are Aluminium (Al), sulfur (S) and oxygen (O) in definite ratio respectively.
The difference between an element and compound is explained with examples of Aluminium (Al) and aluminum sulfate Al(SO4)3.
