Interpretation:
A hypothetical nuclear reaction must be written for the fusion of copper with another nucleus to make gold. Whether it is possible or not must also be explained.
Concept introduction:
Nuclear reactions are those in which new elements are generated by means of fission or fusion.
Answer to Problem SIII4RQ
The hypothetical reaction for the fusion of copper and other nuclei to form gold is as follows:
Here, X element has
Explanation of Solution
The copper nucleus is undergoing nuclear fusion with a tin nucleus to produce a nucleus of gold.
This is not possible as there is no existence of 50Sn134 isotope of tin. It is very unstable with a neutron to proton ratio of 1.68. Also, 29Cu63 is a very stable isotope and that’s why it does not undergo nuclear fusion reaction.
The hypothetical reaction of copper and the tin nucleus to produce a gold nucleus is not possible.
