Interpretation:
The method to plate copper on nickel must be explained with a simple drawing.
Concept introduction:
In electroplating of nickel with copper, a layer of copper is formed on nickel.
Answer to Problem 2E
Copper is plated on nickel with the help of an
The setup for the same is represented as follows:
Explanation of Solution
In copper plating experiment on nickel plate, Cu is taken as anode and nickel is cathode. In this case, nickel strip is taken as cathode on which copper plating will take place. One electrolyte is taken containing copper ion like copper sulfate.
The reduction of copper is represented as follows:
This is the reaction which takes place at cathode and the copper produced by the reduction of Cu2 + is deposited on the nickel metal. Thus nickel strip will be thicker due to deposition of copper atom. Electrolyte such as copper sulfate can be used as the source of copper ion (Cu2 + ).
Thus, a layer of copper is formed on nickel in copper plating experiment.
