Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the elements on the right side of the periodic table to gain electron/s needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Elements which are in the right side of the periodic table are non-metals which have higher electronegativity. It is a property of pulling electron density towards itself while bonded with other atoms.
Answer to Problem 13E
Elements in the right side of periodic table have higher electronegativity. So these prefer to gain electrons rather than losing them.
Explanation of Solution
Number of valence electrons increases from left to right across a period. So it becomes easier for those elements to gain octet (nearest noble gas) configuration by taking very less number of electrons. Getting octet by removing electrons from valence shell is very difficult as there is strong force of attraction between valence electrons and the nucleus.
Thus, due to higher electronegativity elements in the right side of the periodic table gain electrons rather than losing.
