Interpretation: The method to determine the volume of pancake mix needs to be explained.
Concept introduction: The volume of a substance is the amount of space occupied by it. The volume of a solid substance with definite shape can be calculated using formula. For example, volume of cube is cube of its side and volume of rectangle is product of its dimensions.
Explanation of Solution
To calculate the volume of solid, put it on to the weighing machine and check the weight in mg and gm but as in the case of pancake mixture, it has some air. Due to the presence of air, weighing will be incorrect. To determine the correct volume of the pancake powder mixture, dissolve this mixture in a liquid that will not dissolve ingredients of the pancake mixture or not change any chemical property. First, check the volume of liquid through measuring cylinder, and after adding a pancake mixture again checks the volume. By the difference, it can calculate the volume of the pancake mixture.
(b)
Interpretation: The method to determine the volume of hair gel needs to be explained.
Concept introduction: The volume of a substance is the amount of space occupied by it. The volume of a solid substance with definite shape can be calculated using formula. For example, volume of cube is cube of its side and volume of rectangle is product of its dimensions.
Explanation of Solution
Hair gel volume can be calculated by measuring/graduated cylinder. Place an empty measuring cylinder and fill it with the gel to calculate the volume.
(c)
Interpretation: The method to determine the volume of shoebox needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
The volume of a substance is the amount of space occupied by it. The volume of a solid substance with definite shape can be calculated using formula. For example, volume of cube is cube of its side and volume of rectangle is product of its dimensions.
Explanation of Solution
A shoebox has a rectangular shape so to calculate the volume of a shoebox, first measure the length, width, and height of the shoe box. As the volume of rectangular box is product of its length, width and height. Length, width, and height are calculated in cm so the volume of a shoebox will be in cm3.
(d)
Interpretation: The method to determine the volume of a penny needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
The volume of a substance is the amount of space occupied by it. The volume of a solid substance with definite shape can be calculated using formula. For example, volume of cube is cube of its side and volume of rectangle is product of its dimensions.
Explanation of Solution
To check the volume of a penny, apply Archimedes’ principle thus, drop the penny in a measuring/graduated cylinder filled with water and check the volume after dropping a penny. The change in volume will be the volume of a penny that displaces the water.
(e)
Interpretation: The method to determine the volume of a penny needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
The volume of a substance is the amount of space occupied by it. The volume of a solid substance with definite shape can be calculated using formula. For example, volume of cube is cube of its side and volume of rectangle is product of its dimensions.
Explanation of Solution
Lemonade made up of water lemon, sugar, and salt. Take a measured quantity of water in a graduated cylinder, add lemon, sugar, and salt and then check the volume. The difference between the previous quantity and the last one is the volume of lemonade.
