Iron, Fe can remove two or three electrons. When two electrons are removed it produces ferrous salt. But when three electrons are removed than ferric salt is produced. It is an example of variable valency. When sodium is considered it always removes one electron to produce sodium ion with single positive charge.
Thus, valence electrons are very important to predict the type of compound formation.
