Interpretation:
The role of periodic table to determine the charge of an ion needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Periodic table gives the position of the element which also helps to find the valency and nature of ion formed by it.
Answer to Problem 1E
Extreme left elements in the periodic table prefer to produce cation and extreme right elements prefer to produce anions as per their valency.
Explanation of Solution
Sodium belongs to group 1 and period 3. There is only one valence electron present in it. To gain octet configuration, it can remove 1 electron. Thus sodium is electropositive and it will produce monopositive ion (Na + ). On the other hand, chlorine belongs to group 17 and period 3. To gain octet configuration it needs one electron. Thus chlorine is electronegative and prefers to accept one electron producing mononegative chloride ion (Cl-).
Thus periodic table helps in finding the charge on an ion.
