The thing that should be done to invent a new smell by a chemist needs to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Smell is an important physical characteristic of a molecule which depends on the structural features present in the molecule. Functional groups plays important role in contributing smell in a compound.

Explanation of Solution

As functional group is important in controlling physical and chemical properties of a compound hence combination of different functional groups might create a new smell. The contribution of individual functional group as a whole can generate a complex new smell.

Thus, a new smell can be invented by synthesizing new molecules with help of other existing molecules.
