Interpretation:
The relation between the polarity and the smell of the molecule must be explained.
Concept introduction:
Generally small molecules which are non-polar nature don’t have any smell.
Explanation of Solution
Polar molecules are those in which the resultant bond moments is non-zero. So in the molecue there is an equal electron density on different atoms. These molecules can bind with the nasal receptors more tightly due to ionic interaction. So in general polarity is required for the smell of a molecule. Still there are many exceptions. For example benzene is non-polar but it has smell.
As polarity is responsible for the difference in electron density on bonded atoms so it contributes in the smell of a compound.
