Interpretation : The reaction between molecular structure and smell is to be explained.

Concept Introduction :

Structure of a molecule is very useful as it gives valuable information such as the functional groups present in the molecule. By knowing the functional groups one can predict the molecular properties of the compound such as smell.

Explanation of Solution

Compounds that have similar smells also have similar structural features called functional groups. These groups may be an ester, alcohol, ketone, amine or acid. If the functional group present in the molecule is known, one can predict the smell.

For example:

• All esters smell sweet
• All amines smell fishy
• All acids smell putrid
• Ketones smell minty and sweet
• Alcohols smell sweet and medicinal

Conclusion

Thus, compounds that have similar functional groups also have similar properties. For example, esters smell sweet.
