Interpretation : Whether molecular formula of a compound can help in predicting the smell of a compound is to be explained.
Concept Introduction :
Molecules smell differently. The chemistry behind smell is very complicated. There are many evidences that can help predicting smell. These are molecular formula, functional group, chemical name and overall shape of the molecule.
Explanation of Solution
Molecular formula of a compound may give some indication of the kind of smell the compounds may have. For example, if the compound has 2 O atoms it may smell sweet or putrid as in esters and acids. If it has 1 N atom as in
Molecular formula is helpful in predicting only fishy smell accurately. It does not help in distinguishing sweet, putrid, minty and camphor smells.
Thus, molecular formula is valuable at times in predicting smell of some molecules like that of amines.
