Concept explainers
Interpretation:
What does phase change have to do with smell must be explained.
Concept introduction:
Phase change is a physical process in which the physical state is changed due to change in intermolecular attraction.
Answer to Problem 2E
Physical change is responsible for the change in bond angle and overall shape of a molecule. So smell of the molecule might change.
Explanation of Solution
As smell depends on the bonding affinity of odoring molecule with nasal receptors so the change in the arrangements of atoms resulting in the change of molecular shape affects the smell of the molecule. To get smell generally the odoring molecules are converted to gaseous states which reach to the nasal receptors. Solid or liquid molecule can’t diffuse as fast as gas. Thus, phase change is important in detecting smell.
Odoring molecules are generally converted to gaseous molecules before sense of smell is obtained.
