Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the smell hard to detect if someone is used to it needs to be explained using the receptor site theory.
Concept introduction:
Receptor site theory states that smell is the result of binding of odoring molecule from a substance to the nasal receptors.
Answer to Problem 7E
When someone is used to a particular smell, it gets saved in the memory of the person and it is hard to detect that smell.
Explanation of Solution
When same substance is taken for several times then odoring molecules are bound with the nasal receptors. Sometimes this binding persists for longer time. So in the memory of brain sensation of some smells are stored. Thus from receptor site theory, it’s clear that if someone is “get used to” a smell then it is hard to detect.
Thus, receptor site theory is used to explain why someone is “get used to” a smell and hardly detect it.
