Concept explainers
Interpretation :
The term isomers must be explained.
Concept Introduction :
Isomers are compounds with same molecular formula but having different structures.
Answer to Problem 2E
The property by which molecules with same molecular formula can exist in different forms is known as isomerism. Molecules which show different structures but having same molecular formula are isomers.
Explanation of Solution
Molecules particularly organic molecules have different structures with same molecular formula. For example Ethyl alcohol and dimethyl ether both have a general molecular formula C2H6O. But the structures are different.
CH3-CH2-OH is ethyl alcohol but dimethyl ether is CH3-O-CH3. These are isomers.
Isomers are compounds which have same molecular formula but different structures.
