Interpretation:
The property which is not belonging to intermolecular forces between the molecules needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
The forces between the atoms bonded together to form molecules and compounds are known as intermolecular forces.
Answer to Problem 18STP
Option (A)
Explanation of Solution
Reason for correct option/s:
The water molecules have a tendency to spread out on wax paper rather than form drops, it due to its strong surface tension this allows water to bead up.
Reason for incorrect option/s:
Because of hydrogen bonding, water is a liquid and methane is a gas at room temperature due to weak intermolecular forces between the molecules of methane. This property is also based on the intermolecular forces.
Water is a polar molecule due to the differences in electronegativity of the atoms.
Normally, ethanol can dissolve in water but Oil can float on water because of ethanol is polar compound oil is non polar. This is also a property which is based on the intermolecular forces.
Thus, all the three options B, C & D belongs to the property of intermolecular forces, but A does not depend on intermolecular forces.
