Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The role of electronegativity to compare bonds must be explained.
Concept introduction:
Electronegativity is the property for which atom attracts electron density towards it while bonded with other atom.
Answer to Problem 1TAI
A bond is polar if there is difference in electronegativity between the participating atoms.
A bond is non-polar if there is no difference in electronegativity.
Explanation of Solution
For a polar covalent bond, the electron density is not shared equally by the two participating atoms. The elctron density is more towards the electronegative atom.
For homodiatomic molcule, the electronegative difference is zero and so the electron density is shared equally by the participating atoms.
Thus, electronegativity is useful to compare bonds.
