Concept explainers
Interpretation: The pros and cons of using
Concept introduction: Electrochemistry is the study of chemical processes which leads to the movement of electrons. This leads to the generation of electricity.
Answer to Problem 7E
There are various pros and cons of using electrochemistry as a source of energy. Fuel cells show maximum efficiency and reduced the amount of pollutants and carbon dioxide. They are light and also compact. The cons are it is expensive, hydrogen distribution is not that easy, hydrogen is not widely available etc.
Explanation of Solution
The pros of using electrochemistry as a source of energy are,
- Fuel cells shows about 80% energy efficiency.
- There is no degradation of the quality of power provided over time.
- It reduces the amount of carbon dioxide and other pollutants which is harmful to the environment.
- Fuel cells are compact and light.
The cons of using electrochemistry as a source of energy are,
- Due to high cost of the required catalyst, fuel cells are expensive
- There is a lack of infrastructure for the hydrogen distribution.
- Most fuel cell are yet to be validated.
- Production of Hydrogen is expensive and is not easily available.
There are various pros and cons of using electrochemistry as a source of energy.
