Interpretation: The oxidation process of magnesium needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction: Metals are oxidized in air (by the oxygen, O2 of the air) to form the corresponding oxides. The oxides of alkali earth metals are usually colorless. The oxidation process is usually exothermic, i.e., releases heat. The oxidation of magnesium, Mg with O of air produces a dazzling white light.
