Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Electronegativity trends in periodic table need to be described.
Concept introduction:
In a molecule when electrons are not equally shared, polar covalent bond is formed. More electronegative atom will has partial negative charge and less electronegative atom has a partial positive charge.
Answer to Problem 113A
Electronegativity trend in period is increases from left to right and in a group it decreases from top to bottom.
Explanation of Solution
Power of an atom to attract electrons in a bond is electro negativity. Electro negativity is directly proportional to ionic character of the bond. From left to right in period, electro negativity increases. This is because in a period atomic size increases from left to right. From top to bottom in group, electro negativity decreases. This is because in group, number of protons in nucleus decreases on moving from top to bottom.
Thus, electro negativity trend in period is increases from left to right and in a group it decreases from top to bottom.
