Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The drawing strategy of Lewis structure is needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Lewis structure is also called Lewis dot structure. In this structure, valance electrons are represented by dot symbol around the central atom. This structure shows the Bonding between molecule and the lone pairs which may occur in the molecule.
Answer to Problem 97A
To draw a molecules Lewis structure, it is necessary to know the atoms valence electrons.
Explanation of Solution
The following are the important steps to draw a Lewis structure:
Step 1: The first step is to predict the position of certain atom.
Step2: Determine the electrons number which is available for bonding. This number of electron equal to outermost electrons is present on the molecule.
Step 3: Bonding pair needs to be determined.
Step 4: Bonding pair between the central atom and each of the terminal atoms is connected by single bond.
Step 5: Calculate the remaining bonding pairs number.
Step 6: This is the end step of drawing a Lewis structure. In this step, examine if the central atom satisfies the octet rule or not. If the central atom fails to satisfy the rule of the octet, the terminal atoms bind one or two of the lone pairs to a double bond or triple bond between the terminal atom and the central atom.
An element achieves stable electronic configuration if the outermost shell holds eight electrons.
