Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The difference between a strong acid and a weak acid must be explained.
Concept introduction:
A strong acid ionizes completely in aqueous solution. A weak acid ionizes partially in aqueous solution.
Answer to Problem 3E
A strong acid solution contains only ions whereas a weak acid solution contains ions as well as undissociated acid molecules.
Explanation of Solution
A+ and B-represent the cations and anions of the acids, whereas AB represents undissociated acid molecules. It is clear from the drawing that strong acid undergoes complete ionization, whereas weak acid undergoes partial ionization.
