Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Acids and bases needs to be defined.
Concept introduction:
Acids and bases are chemical substances which accept electrons and donates electron respectively.
Answer to Problem 1TAI
According to Arrhenius concept, H+ donors are acids and OH- donors are bases in aqueous solution.
According to the Bronsted-Lowry concept, H+ donors are acids and H+ acceptors are bases.
According to Lewis concept, lone pair acceptors are acids and lone pair donors are bases.
Explanation of Solution
Various concepts are there to define acids and bases which are Arrhenius concept, Bronsted-Lowry concept, Lewis concept, etc.
Lewis concept is a broad concept which also holds the definition of Arrhenius concept and Bronsted-Lowry concept.
HCl is an acid and NaOH is a base as per Arrhenius concept as these produces H+ and OH- ions in aqueous solution respectively.
HNO3 is an acid and NO3- is a base as per Bronsted-Lowry concept as HNO3 produces H+ in aqueous solution, whereas NO3- is a proton acceptor.
BF3 is an acid and NH3 is a base as per Lewis concept as BF3 can accept lone pair of electrons, whereas NH3 can donate lone pair of electrons.
