Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Some of the observable properties of acids and bases must be explained.
Concept introduction:
Acids are electron acceptors and bases are electron donors.
Answer to Problem 1E
Aqueous acid solution changes the color of blue litmus to red whereas aqueous base solution changes the color of red litmus to blue litmus. Most of the acids and bases can produce hydrogen after reacting with metals. Acids are sour in taste.
Explanation of Solution
Different concepts are there to define acids and bases. Some of them are Arrhenius concept, Bronsted Lowry concept and Lewis concept.
With the help of indicators like litmus, acids and bases can be identified. So color change of litmus is an observable properties of acids and bases.
In acids, due to the presence of active hydrogens, they can react with metals liberating hydrogen gas.
