Concept explainers
Interpretation:
A missing reactant for the synthesis of sulfuric acid must be found. The reaction must be balanced and how the toxic gas enters the body must also be explained.
Concept introduction:
Sulfur trioxide is dissolved in water to produce sulfuric acid.
Answer to Problem 5E
The missing reactant is sulfur trioxide (SO3).
The balanced equation is given below.
The gas can enter our body through inhalation along with oxygen during breathing.
Explanation of Solution
From the reaction, it can be seen that there is one sulfur atom on both sides, also, two hydrogen atoms and four oxygen atoms on both sides. Thus, the reaction is balanced. Sulfur trioxide can be produced in the atmosphere due to the combustion of SO2 in air. Thus, while consuming oxygen in the SO3 rich atmosphere, this toxic gas might enter our body.
