Concept explainers
Interpretation : Out of one Celsius degree and one Fahrenheit degree, the larger degree has to be identified.
Concept Introduction : There are two types of temperature scales, a Celsius scale and a Fahrenheit scale. Celsius scale was created by Andreas Celsius in 1747 and Fahrenheit scale was created by German scientist Daniel Fahrenheit in 1724.
Answer to Problem 6E
One Celsius degree is more than one Fahrenheit degree.
Explanation of Solution
In Celsius scale, the melting temperature of ice is 00C and boiling point of water is 1000C as measured at sea level. On the Fahrenheit scale, the melting temperature of ice is 320F and boiling point of water is 2120F. There are 100 degrees difference between 00C and 1000C and 180 degrees difference between 320F and 2120F. So a Fahrenheit degree unit is much smaller change in temperature than a Celsius degree unit. Hence, one Celsius degree is more than one Fahrenheit degree.
Two commonly used scales are the Celsius scale and the Fahrenheit scale. Most of the world and most scientists use Celsius scale while weather report in United States gives temperatures in Fahrenheit. We can convert from degree Celsius to degree Fahrenheit using a mathematical formula.
