Rain gauge has a funnel type device attached to a cylindrical tube to which measuring scale is attached.
When it rains, rain water falls in the funnel type of device and it goes to the measuring tube.
As the height of water level in the rain gauge increases, that represents the increase in rainfall.

Volume of a liquid is directly proportional to the height of the cylindrical container.
As the volume of rain increases outside, then its volume increases even in the rain gauge also then, the height of the liquid level also increases simultaneously.
