Interpretation:Comprehend three ways to change a gas sample.
Concept Introduction:Matter can exist in three possible
Solids are the substances with least intermolecular distance and strongest intermolecular forces whereas gases have largest intermolecular distance and weakest intermolecular forces. Liquids have intermediate value of intermolecular distance and intermolecular forces.
These states of matter can interconvert into each other and is called as interconversion of states of matter.
Answer to Problem 1E
- Heating of gas can dissociate the gas molecules into different gas molecules.
- Mixing with other gases can make a mixture of gases.
- Freezing of gas can make either liquid or solid.
Explanation of Solution
The different interconversions of states of matter are:
- Melting- Conversion of solid to liquid
- Evaporation − Conversion of liquid to gas
- Condensation − Conversion of gas to liquid
- Sublimation − Conversion of solid to gas
- Freezing − Conversion of liquid to solid
A gas sample can change with the help of different ways. For example, heating of a gas can dissociate the gas into its component. The freezing or condensation of gas can change the gas to solid and liquid respectively. For example; carbon dioxide gas can change to dry ice at high pressure and low temperature.
The mixing of gas sample can form a mixture of gases or a new gas if the gas samples react with each other. For example; ammonia gas and hydrochloride gas mix to form ammonium chloride.
- Mixing
- Heating
- Freezing.
