Interpretation:Comprehend the terms sublimation and evaporation.
Concept Introduction: Matter can exist in three possible
Solids are the substances with least intermolecular distance and strongest intermolecular forces whereas gases have largest intermolecular distance and weakest intermolecular forces.
Liquids have intermediate value of intermolecular distance and intermolecular forces.
These states of matter can interconvert into each other and is called as interconversion of states of matter.
Answer to Problem 3E
Sublimation can be defined as the process of conversion of solid to gaseous state. Evaporation is the conversion of liquid to gaseous state.
Explanation of Solution
The different interconversions of states of matter are:
- Melting- Conversion of solid to liquid
- Evaporation − Conversion of liquid to gas
- Condensation − Conversion of gas to liquid
- Sublimation − Conversion of solid to gas
- Freezing − Conversion of liquid to solid
Thus Sublimation can be defined as the process of conversion of solid to gas without changing to liquid state like conversion of dry ice to gaseous carbon dioxide is a sublimation process.
Evaporation is the process of liquid to gas like heating of water forms water vapor.
- Evaporation − Conversion of liquid to gas
- Sublimation − Conversion of solid to gas
