Concept explainers
Interpretation: The effect of heating a gas in a sealed container is to be discussed.
Concept introduction: The gas molecules possess a property of random motion. On collision with the walls of the sealed container they exert force that results in application of pressure on the walls of the container.
Answer to Problem 4E
A gas should not be heated in sealed container as it may lead to explosion due to increased pressure.
Explanation of Solution
The average speed of molecules of gas increases on increase in temperature. This leads to the exertion of greater amount of force by gas molecules on the walls of the container. Due to increased temperature, the collision of gas molecules with the walls of the container also increases. The gas molecules experience a greater pressure on heating. Due to this increased pressure the chances of explosion increase. This is also the reason that there should be no heat near the gas cylinders as the increased pressure due to increased temperature may lead to explosion of the cylinder.
A gas should not be heated in sealed container as it may lead to explosion due to increased pressure.
