Concept explainers
Interpretation :
The decrease in air pressure with increasing altitude must be explained.
Concept Introduction :
Air pressure or the atmospheric pressure is due to the weight of the column of air which is present from ground to higher altitude.
Answer to Problem 1E
Air pressure decreases with increase in altitude because the length of the column of air decreases.
Explanation of Solution
Due to gravity, the air is denser near the ground sea level. With the increase of altitude the air becomes lighter. The upper limit where the presence of air can be detected is around 10000 km. So, the length of column of air decreases as higher altitude is reached. Thus, air pressure decreases.
The decrease in air pressure with the increase in altitude is explained.
