CandyTime is a new competitor of ChocoTown and they are considering opening a 4,000 square foot store at location (30,10). Assume the travel time from location i to j in minutes equals the straight line distance from i to j.
a) Use the spatial interaction model to estimate the demand that would be captured by the new CandyTime store.
Demand captured by CandyTime = ___________
b) Suppose the CandyTime store is located at (30,10), but it is not 4,000 square feet. Use the spatial interaction model to find the size in square feet for…
Laredo Leather Company manufactures high-quality leather goods. The company's profits have declined during the past nine months. In an attempt to isolate the causes of poor profit performance, management is investigating the manufacturing operations of each of its products.
One of the company's main products is leather belts. The belts are produced in a single, continuous process in the Dallas plant. During the process, leather strips are sewn, punched, and dyed. The belts then enter a final finishing stage to conclude the process. Labor and overhead are applied continuously during the manufacturing process. All materials, leather strips, and buckles are introduced at the beginning of the process. The firm uses the weighted-average method to calculate its unit costs.
The leather belts produced at the Dallas plant are sold wholesale for $9.95 each. Management wants to compare the current manufacturing costs per unit with market prices for leather belts. The top management has…
Hudson Corporation is considering three options for managing its data processing operation: continuing with its own staff, hiring an outside vendor to do the managing, or using a combination of its staff and an outside vendor. The profit of the corporation depends on future demand. The annual profit of each option (in thousands of dollars) depends on demand as follows:

Recommend a decision based on the use of the optimistic, conservative, and minimax regret approaches.
If the demand probabilities are 0.2, 0.5, and 0.3, respectively for High, Median, and Low demands, use the expected value approach to determine the optimal decision(show steps).

- Employees at Precision Engine Parts Company produce parts according to exact design specifications. The employees are paid according to a piece-rate system, wherein the faster they work and the more parts they produce, the greater their chances for monthly bonuses. Management suspects that this method of pay may contribute to an increased number of defective parts. A specific part requires a normal, standard time of 23 minutes to produce. The quality control manager has checked the actual average times to produce this part for 10 different employees during 20 days selected at random during the past month and determined the corresponding percentage of defective parts, as follows: Develop a linear regression model relating average production time to percentage defects to determine whether a relationship exists and the percentage of defective items that would be expected with a normal production time of 23 minutes.arrow_forwardBest Buy is the largest consumer electronics retailer in the United States with 2015 sales of more than $40 billion. The company competes aggressively on price with rivals such as Costco Wholesale, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Target, but is also known by consumers for its first-rate customer service. Best Buy customers have commented that the retailer’s sales staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about products and can direct them to the exact location of difficult-to-find items. Best Buy customers also appreciate that demonstrationmodels of PC monitors, digital media players, and other electronics are fully powered and ready for in-store use. Best Buy’s Geek Squad tech support and installation services are additional customer service features valued by many customers.Discussion Question:How would you characterize Best Buy’s competitive strategy? The profit per night for each type of room and rental class is as follows: Rental Class Super Saver Deluxe Business Room Type I $30 $35 — Type II $20 $30 $40 Type I rooms do not have high-speed Internet access and are not available for the Business rental class. Round Tree's management makes a forecast of the demand by rental class for each night in the future. A linear programming model developed to maximize profit is used to determine how many reservations to accept for each rental class. The demand forecast for a particular night is 160 rentals in the Super Saver class, 50 rentals in the Deluxe class, and 40 rentals in the Business class. Round Tree has 100 Type I rooms and 120 Type II rooms. 1. **Use linear programming to determine how many reservations to accept in each rental class and how the…arrow_forward

The pharmacies are staffed by licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The company currently employs 85 full-time-equivalent pharmacists (combination of full time and part time) and 175 full-time-equivalent technicians. Each spring management reviews current staffing levels and makes hiring plans for the year. A recent forecast of the prescription load for the next year shows that at least 250 full-time-equivalent employees (pharmacists and technicians) will be required to staff the pharmacies. The personnel department expects 10 pharmacists and 30 technicians to leave over the next year. To accommodate the expected attrition and prepare for future growth, management states that at least 15 new pharmacists must be hired. In addition, PharmaPlus’s new service quality guidelines specify no more than two technicians per licensed pharmacist. The average salary for licensed pharmacists is $40 per hour and the average salary for technicians…arrow_forward
- The Seaside Hotel is a three-star hotel in Newquay, Cornwall. It contains 108 rooms and employs 30 fulltime and 40 parttime personnel. Between May and August, the hotel's workforce is nearly doubled by casual and temporary workers. Cornwall is a difficult place to do business, especially in the tourism industry. Business is highly seasonal with hotels experiencing very low occupancy during the offseason and many hotels choose not to operate during this time. The Seaside Hotel operates all year round by supplementing its tourism trade during the off-season by offering discounted conferencing facilities for local businesses and as a cheap base for corporate events and activities, such as team building weekends. Tourism is, however, vitally important for the region and its businesses and provides a significant proportion of all jobs in the South West. Cornwall can, however, be a difficult place in which to work. For instance, Newquay – Cornwall’s most popular holiday destination – is one…arrow_forwardAs part of a quality improvement initiative, Consolidated Electronics employees complete a three-day training program on teaming and a two-day training program on problem-solving. The manager of quality improvement has requested that at least 8 training programs on teaming and at least 10 training programs on problem-solving be offered during the next six months. In addition, senior-level management has specified that at least 25 training programs must be offered during this period. Consolidated Electronics uses a consultant to teach the training programs. During the next quarter, the consultant has 84 days of training time available. Each training program on teaming costs $10,000 and each training program on problem-solving costs $8,000. a. - The Canadian government has built a large grain-shipping port at Churchill, Manitoba, on the Hudson Bay. Grain grown in southern Manitoba is carried by rail to Churchill during the open-water shipping season. Unfortunately the port is open only 50 days per year during July and August. This leads to some critical crew staffing decisions by management. The port has the capacity to load up to 7 ships simultaneously, provided that each loading bay has an assigned crew. The remote location and short shipping season results in a very high labor cost for each crew assigned, and management would like to minimize the number of crews. Ships arrive in a random pattern that can be modeled using the Poisson probability model. If a ship arrives and all available loading bays are filled, the ship will be delayed, resulting in a large cost that must be paid to the owner of the ship. This penalty was negotiated to encourage ship owners to send their ships to Churchill. Results of an initial analysis…arrow_forwardMacon Controls produces three different types of control units used to protect industrial equipment from overheating.
