Interpretation: Three possible sources of error in a calorimetry experiment needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction: Calorimetry is the science of measuring the energy released or absorbed by a chemical or physical change. In combustion reaction a bomb calorimeter is used to measure the quantity of heat transferred.
Answer to Problem 1E
Three possible source of error in a calorimetry is as follows:
- Temperature measurement
- Mass measurement
- Unwanted heat loss to the surrounding
Explanation of Solution
In calorimetry experiment it is very difficult to control heat transfer to the surrounding air and equipment. The number of calories transferred from a substance that burns depends on the identity of the substance and its mass. It is very often to occur errors in temperature measurement, mass measurement and heat loss in calorimetry analysis.
Error indicates the difference between a measured value and known value. It often indicates the estimated uncertainty in an experiment.
