Concept Introduction: According to the Bohr model, the energy levels at which electrons circle the nucleus are constant. At higher energies, orbits are found farther from the nucleus. Light is produced as energy is released when electrons drop to a lower energy level.
Explanation of Solution
Based on the quantum theory, which states that certain physical quantities can only take possible values, Niels Bohr offered a theory for the hydrogen atom. Electrons can only move around a nucleus in their predetermined orbits; if they move to the next level, the energy difference is dissipated as radiation.
The postulates of the Bohr model are shown as:
- Electrons will travel in a circular path surrounding the nucleus, which will be termed an orbital.
- Each orbital will contain its own definite energy.
- The energy level will be indicated by the n, quantum number which will be indicated by n where n is 1,2,3….
