Chapter 23, Problem 23.93SP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Structure should be drawn to show how the sugar and base components of a nucleic acid are joined.

Concept introduction:

Nucleotide is a compound consisting of a nucleoside linked to a phosphate group. And they form the basis structural unit of nucleic acid like DNA and RNA.

A base is nitrogen containing heterocyclic compound which is found in DNA and RNA.

In a nucleotide three different kinds of components are present and they are,

  1. (1) Pentose sugar
  2. (2) Nitrogen base
  3. (3) Phosphate group

Nucleoside=Nitrogenousbase+sugar

A base is nitrogen containing heterocyclic compound which is found in DNA and RNA.

Nucleotide=Nucleoside+phosphate

Glycosidic linkage is a type of covalent bond that joins a carbohydrate (sugar) molecule to another group, which may or may not be another carbohydrate.
