The difference between a straight-chain alkane and a branched-chain alkane has to be given.

Alkanes:

Alkenes are one of the important types of hydrocarbon which have only carbon-carbon single bond ($\text{C}-\text{C}$ ). According to the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry the name of an alkane ends with ane. Alkanes have a general formula  ${\text{C}}_{\text{n}}{\text{H}}_{\text{2n+2}}$ where n is the number of carbon atom.

Straight chain alkanes are the alkanes which may contain any number of carbon atoms one after the other in a chain.

Branched chain alkanes are the alkanes obtained by replacing one or more hydrogen atoms in a straight chain alkane by alkyl groups.
