Concept Introduction:
The bond result from the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions is called ionic bond and the bond result from the mutual sharing of electrons between atoms is called covalent bond.
The bond order is defined as the number of electron pairs that are shared between two atoms. The bond order in single bond is one. The bond order in a double bond is two and in triple bond a bond order is three.
The increase in bond order between two atoms increases the strength of the bond and decreases the distance of bond.

- What aspect of the following Lewis structure indicates that the concept of coordinate covalency is needed to explain the bonding in the molecule?arrow_forwardExplain why bonds occur at specific average bond distances instead of the atoms approaching each other infinitely close.arrow_forwardAccording to the VSEPR model, what are the arrangements of two, three, four, five, and six valence-shell electron pairs about an atom?arrow_forward
- What is the molecular geometry (same as molecular shape) if you have 2 single bonds, 1 doubles bond and 1 lone pair around the center atom?arrow_forwardSuppose that a molecule has four bonding groups and one lone pair on the central atom. Suppose further that the molecule is confined to two dimensions (this is a purely hypothetical assumption for the sake of understanding the principles behind VSEPR theory). Draw the molecule and estimate the bond angles.arrow_forwardWhat effect does the presence of lone-pair electrons have on the bond angles in a molecule?arrow_forward
- Which of the following statements is/are true about the Lewis bond theory? (a) It explains the stability of the molecule. (b) It explains why one covalent bond might differ from another. (c) It ignores the energy changes in chemical bond formation. (d) It treats all covalent bond in the same manner. a and b O b and c O c and d a and darrow_forwardExplain why acetic acid does not have any resonance structures while the acetate ion does ? How does this affect the bond order of these molecules ?arrow_forwardWhat role does electronegativity plays in rationalizing bond angles?arrow_forward
- What diagrams can be used to represent covalent bonding?arrow_forwardPart A) Draw the following lewis structures and give the formal charges for the atoms as well as the number of valence electrons I2 Part B)According to VSEPR theory, why are bonds and lone pairs spaced as far apart as possible? Part C)Why can we ignore the disposition of the lone pairs on terminal atoms? Part D)What are the bond angles for a molecule having an octahedral electronic geometry with two lone pairs and four bonds on the central atom?arrow_forward8. In the sulfur tetrafluoride (SF4) molecule, all four F atoms are bonded to the central S atom. The following question set concerns this molecule.a) Draw the Lewis structure for sulfur tetrafluoride (SF4). [2]b) Which electron pair geometry does the SF4 molecule belong to?
