Chapter 7, Problem 7.23P

The proposed design for an anemometer to determine the velocity of an airstream in a wind tunnel is comprised of a thin metallic strip whose ends are supported by stiff rods serving as electrodes for passage of current used to heat the strip. A fine-wire thermocouple is attached to the trailing edge of the strip and serves as the sensor for a system that controls the power to maintain the strip at a constant operating temperature for variable airstream velocities. Design conditions pertain to an airstream at T = 25 ° C and 1 u 50 m/s, with a strip temperature of T s = 35 ° C .
Chapter 7, Problem 7.23P, The proposed design for an anemometer to determine the velocity of an airstream in a wind tunnel is

  1. Determine the relationship between the electrical power dissipation per unit width of the strip in the transverse direction, P ' ( mW/mm ) , and the airstream velocity. Show this relationship graphically for the specified range of u .
  2. If the accuracy with which the temperature of the operating strip can be measured and maintained constant is ± 0.2 ° C, what is the uncertainty in the airstream velocity?
  3. The proposed design operates in a strip constant-temperature mode for which the airstream velocityis related to the measured power. Consider now an alternative mode wherein the strip is provided with a constant power, say, 30 mW/mm, and the airstream velocity is related to the measured strip temperature T s . For this mode of operation, show the graphical relationship between the strip temperature and airstream velocity. If the temperature can be measured with an uncertainty of ± 0.2 ° C, what is the uncertainty in the airstream velocity?
  4. Compare the features associated with each of the anemometer operating modes.

Problem 2: Professor Soma's 1/25,000th scale model measurement data showed that the maximum mixing length: Lm = 4 cm, the maximum downward velocity: Vm = 1 m/s, and turbulent frequency: w = 10 (Hz). When the scaling laws were developed, the above data can be used to estimate the corresponding mixing length, downward velocity, and turbulent frequency for the full scale, which can help assess the impact caused by turbulent motion to the jetliner. Answer the following questions. (1) Develop scaling laws on the mixing length, the downward velocity, and turbulent frequency, and estimate each of these three values for the full scale. (2) Calculate a jet engine power: P which is required to overcome this turbulent impact, assuming this jetliner has twin engines and the total jetliner weight: W (jetliner's body weight, 3,000 ton plus the maximum takeoff weight, 2,000 ton). Make any assumptions that you need for this calculation, and state them clearly.
ALS manufacturers are involved in manufacturing, building, and assembling Offshore booster compressorunits, which include DNV skids and air receiver vessels, and they package everything in-house.To ensure quality control throughout the entire package preparation: no third-party manufacturers areused to assemble this booster compressor. As an engineer for the company, it is your task to design the air receiver vessel (pressure vessel) for theCompressor skid (as shown in the diagram) required for an offshore platform. This air receiver is used to store compressed air and is mounted vertically (See photo), the material used isan Aluminium alloy, and the Height of the Compressor skid is 10ft. See excel file “LO2 Data”Determine:1. The required material thickness (in inches) required for the air receiver shell.2. The required material thickness (in inches) required for the air receiver head.Note: According to the design standard, the head thickness = 2.5 x Shell thickness3. Based on the…
