Question
Chapter 19, Problem 13STP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation : The number of strong acids is to be identified.
Concept Introduction : Acids are substances that contain hydrogen and ionize to produce hydrogen ions
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 13STP
Only B is a strong acid.
Explanation of Solution
Strong acids totally dissociate, therefore there are no undissociated acid molecules in their solutions.
However, weaker acids only dissolve partially, thus their solutions still include some undissociated species.
As can be seen from the illustration, only acid B is a strong acid because all other acids have been dissociated into their conjugate bases.
The product’s picture contains no undissolved acid at all.
