Interpretation: The reason for the diversity in properties of covalent compounds needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction: A covalent bond is formed by sharing of valence electrons between two atoms. It is formed between two non-metals.
Explanation of Solution
The properties of covalent compounds are so diverse because there are different types of covalent bonds formed between the atoms. A covalent bond can be polar or non-polar. If the atoms involved in bonding have comparable electronegativity, the covalent bond formed is non-polar but if there is electronegativity different between two atoms involved in covalent bonding, the covalent bond is polar. Here, an atom with more electronegativity has a partial negative charge, and an atom with less electronegativity has a partial positive charge.
Also, there are different intermolecular attractions resulting in different properties of covalent compounds. The type of intermolecular attractions is London dispersion forces, dipole-dipole interactions, and hydrogen bonding.
