GO In Fig. 35-45, a broad beam of light of wavelength 620 nm is sent directly downward through the top plate of a pair of glass plates touching at the left end. The air between the plates acts as a thin film, and an interference pattern can be seen from above the plates. Initially, a dark fringe lies at the left end, a bright fringe lies at the right end, and nine dark fringes lie between those two end fringes. The plates are then very gradually squeezed together at a constant rate to decrease the angle between them. As a result, the fringe at the right side changes between being bright to being dark every 15.0 s. (a) At what rate is the spacing between the plates at the right end being changed? (b) By how much has the spacing there changed when both left and right ends have a dark fringe and there are five dark fringes between them?

- Both sides of a uniform film that has index of refraction n and thickness d are in contact with air. For normal incidence of light, an intensity minimum is observed in the reflected light at λ2 and an intensity maximum is observed at λ1, where λ1 > λ2. (a) Assuming no intensity minima are observed between λ1 and λ2, find an expression for the integer m in Equations 27.13 and 27.14 in terms of the wavelengths λ1 and λ2. (b) Assuming n = 1.40, λ1 = 500 nm, and λ2 = 370 nm, determine the best estimate for the thickness of the film.arrow_forward1)) Electromagnetic radiation of intensity I0 = 380 W/m^2 passes through two parallel. Arrow slots that are d = 2.8 μm part and strikes a screen located L = 1.4 m from the slits. The intensity of the radiation in the screen at y = 4.6 mm from the central interference maximum is I = 55 W/m^2. A)) Calculate the phase difference, in radians, between the rays from the two slits as they strike the screen at the specified distance from the center maximum, B)) Calculate the average wavelength of the radiation, in nanometers.arrow_forwardWhite light is incident on a soap film at an angle of sin 5 and the reflected light on examination by the spectroscope shows dark bands. The consecutive dark bands corresponds to wavelength 6100 Å and 6000 Å. If the refractive index of the film is 4/3, calculate its thickness.arrow_forward

The refractive index of the oil is 1.23 and that of the plastic is 1.44. What is the nonzero thickness, in nanometers, of the thinnest oil film that causes such interference? sin) cos() tan() 7|8 9 HOME cotan() asin() acos() 4 | 5 atan() acotan() sinh() *1| 2 +| - vol BACKSPACE DEL CLEAR cosh() tanh() cotanh() END ODegrees O Radians Submit Hint Feedback I give up!arrow_forwardThere is a thin film of soap bubble of thickness d on air with a refractive index of n. When an incident light of wavelength is falling on the soap bubble it is creating a dark fringe and when the wavelength is falling it is creating a bright fringe of the same order at the same position on screen. Prove that the order of the fringe is From the above relation find the thickness of the soap bubble of refractive index 1.35 which is creating a bright fringe for 370nm and a dark fringe for 500nm.arrow_forward
- A sheet of metal has a large number of slits, each 5.0 mm wide and 20 cm apart. It is used as a diffraction grating for microwaves, producing bangs on a bulkhead. A broad parallel microwave beam is incident normally on the sheet. Considering c = 3.00 × 10⁸ m/s, answer the following two questions about this situation: (A) If the microwave wavelength is 6.0 cm, what is the greatest angle measured from the central maximum for which an intensity maximum occurs? 88⁰ 69° 64° 60⁰ 82° 74°arrow_forwardA diffraction pattern forms when light passes through a single slit.
