Chapter 22, Problem 155CWP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The carboxylic acid that is necessary to complete the following esterification reaction is to be named.

Concept introduction: Esterification reactions are defined as the reactions between the carboxylic acids and alcohols in the presence of a strong acid catalyst such as H2SO4 to form an ester along with water. This reaction is reversible as well as irreversible in nature and mostly used for the determination of carboxylic acids and alcohols. This is commonly called as fisher esterification reaction.

To determine: The name of the carboxylic acid that is necessary to complete the following esterification reaction.

In an esterification reaction, a carboxylic acid reacts with an excess of alcohol in acidic conditions to form an ester. Draw the structure of the ester product in the reaction between pentanoic acid and 1‑propanol. pentanoic acid+ 1-propanol= ester+ H20  structure of ester product needed
1. a) Use structures to show the formation of an ester via a condensation reaction. Specifically: First draw structures of palmitic acid and methanol Then draw the ester that would form when this acid and alcohol are heated with HCl as an acid catalyst. ● b) In Part A of Lab #7, how will you know that you've successfully condensed the various acid and alcohol functional groups to form ester linkages? c) Which of the condensation reagents do you need to handle with care, and why?
1. Dehydration: 2. Oxidation: This is a reaction where an alcohol loses a water molecule to form an alkene. For example, when ethanol is treated with an acidic catalyst, such as sulfuric acid, it undergoes dehydration to form ethene (CH2=CH2) and water. ALCOHOLS In this reaction, an alcohol is converted to either a carbonyl compound or a carboxylic acid. 3. Esterification: Types of Reaction (s) For example, primary alcohols can be oxidized to aldehydes or carboxylic acids, while secondary alcohols can be oxidized to ketones. Tertiary alcohols are usually not affected by oxidations 4. Substitution: The conversion of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid to an ester and water, in the presence of an acid catalyst. The reaction between methanol and acetic acid to form methyl acetate: CH3OH + CH3COOH CH3COOCH3 + H2O Click to add speaker notes ME Substitution reactions in organic chemistry involve the replacement of one atom or group of atoms with another atom or group of atoms in a molecule. 1.…
