Chapter 21, Problem 3PP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

In a laboratory, the procedure for separation of a mixture of 4-methyl phenol, benzoic acid, and toluene is to be determined, on the basis of solubility difference.

Concept introduction:

Methyl phenols are derivatives of phenols in which a hydrogen atom is attached to the carbon ring is replaced by a methyl (CH3) group. Another name for these compounds is cresol. These compounds are soluble in NaOH.

Benzoic acid is a derivative of benzene. It consists of a carboxylic acid group on the benzene ring. It is slightly soluble in sodium bicarbonate.

Toluene is a mono-substituted derivative of benzene. In these compounds, a hydrogen atom attached to the carbon ring is replaced by a methyl (CH3) group.
