Compounds that are made up of ions are said to be ionic compounds. The atoms that gain electrons forms negatively charged particle and atoms lose electrons to form positively charged particles. The ionic compounds are formed due to the force of attraction between the positively charged and negatively charged ions. Due to these forces, it displays certain properties like
- High melting and boiling point: The forces of attraction between the ions are strong making it difficult for the breaking the bonds. These compounds require high energy to convert to liquid or vapor.
- Hard and brittle: The ionic compounds are formed due to electrostatic forces existing between the positively charged and negatively charged ions. Due to the strong forces, the ions occupy crystal lattice and is thus brittle. To break the crystal requires high energy.
- High enthalpy of fusion and vaporization: As the ionic compounds have ions that are held by strong electrostatic forces of attraction, to break the bonds to convert to liquid or vapor requires high energy. This energy for converting to vapor is enthalpy of vaporization and energy required to convert to liquid requires enthalpy of fusion.
