Figure 6-22 shows the cross section of a road cut into the side of a mountain. The solid line AA′ represents a weak bedding plane along which sliding is possible. Block B directly above the highway is separated from uphill rock by a large crack (called a joint), so that only friction between the block and the bedding plane prevents sliding. The mass of the block is 1.8 × 107 kg, the dip angle θ of the bedding plane is 24°, and the coefficient of static friction between block and plane is 0.63. (a) Show that the block will not slide under these circumstances. (b) Next, water seeps into the joint and expands upon freezing, exerting on the block a force

- A house is built on the top of a hill with a nearby slope at angle u = 45 . An engineering study indicates that the slope angle should be reduced because the top layers of soil along the slope might slip past the lower layers. If the coefficient of static friction between two such layers is 0.5, what is the least angle f through which the present slope should be reduced to prevent slippage?arrow_forwardA 5 kg box rests on a tabletop. On one side, it compresses a spring with a stiffness of 1000 N/m by 1 cm. If the friction force cancels out the force of the spring what must be the minimum coefficient of static friction between the box and table to keep the box from moving?arrow_forwardThe coefficient of static friction between a block of mass m and an incline is = 0•3. (a) What can be the maximum angle e of the incline with the horizontal so that the block does not slip on the plane ? (b) If the incline makes an angle 8/2 with the horizontal, find the frictional force on the block.arrow_forward
- Sally wants to hang up some decorations on the side of her house, so she props up a ladder of length L = 3m against a wall at an angle of θ = 50° with respect to the horizontal. The ground is somewhat icy, where the coefficient of static friction between the ground and the ladder’s feet is µ = 0.55; while the wall of her house can be considered frictionless. If Sally has a mass of 60kg and the ladder has a mass of 80kg, what is the max distance that she can climb up the length of the ladder without it slipping? You may assume the ground is perfectly flat, and the wall is perpendicular to the ground.arrow_forwardA plastic box is sitting on a steel beam. One end of the steel beam is slowly raised, increasing the angle of the surface until the box begins to slip. If the box begins to slip when the beam is at an angle of 41 degrees, what is the static coefficient of friction between the steel beam and the plastic box? 41°arrow_forwardYou are a member of an alpine rescue team and must get a box of supplies, with mass 2.10 kg, up an incline of constant slope angle 30.0° so that it reaches a stranded skier who is a vertical distance 2.90 m above the bottom of the incline. There is some friction present; the kinetic coefficient of friction is 6.00×10-2. Since you can't walk up the incline, you give the box a push that gives it an initial velocity; then the box slides up the incline, slowing down under the forces of friction and gravity. Take acceleration due to gravity to be 9.81 m/s². Part A Use the work-energy theorem to calculate the minimum speed that you must give the box at the bottom of the incline so that it will reach the Express your answer numerically, in meters per second. ► View Available Hint(s) V= ΕΠΙΑΣΦΑ A20 ^ ? m/sarrow_forward
- You are a bully. You pin a 48 kg dweeb to a wall so that his feet aren't touching the ground. Your arm is extended so that it makes an angle 28 degrees with the horizontal. The dweeb's back is so sweaty with fear that there is no friction between his back and the wall. What is the magnitude of the force , in N, you must apply to keep the dweeb in equilibrium? (Use g = 10 m/s2) This scenario is represented schematically below. Unfortunately for you, years later the dweeb is your boss and he makes your life miserable. The coefficients of friction between the block and the board are μs= 0.450 and μ = 0.400. The end of the board where the block sits is slowly raised until the angle the board makes with the horizontal is α0, and then the block starts to slide down the board. If the angle is kept equal to α0 as the block slides, what is the speed of the block when it reaches the bottom of the board? Express your answer with the appropriate units.arrow_forward
- Logs weighing 1.3 kg and 2.2 kg lie on a flat surface and are connected by a rope that breaks at a force of 20 N. The coefficient of friction between the lighter log and the base is 0.50, and between the heavier log and the base 0.30. With what maximum force can we pull the lighter log so that the string does not break?arrow_forwardsin θ tan θ cos θ cot θarrow_forwardA laboratory on the concept of static equilibrium uses an apparatus called a force table. The force table consists of a round, level platform marked in degree increments about its circumference. In the center of the table sits a massless ring, to which three strings are tied. Each string is strung over a m, separate pulley clamped to the edge of the platform, and then tied to a freely-hanging mass, so that each string is under tension and the ring is suspended parallel to the table surface. m, m, A mass of m1 0.153 kg is located at 0, 26.5°, and a second maSs of m2 0.223 kg is located at 0, 279°.
